Research Focus:

Rising atmospheric levels of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide are depleting ozone and causing changes in earths climate. These emissions are the result of a natural process that occurs in soils called denitrification whereby nitrous oxide is produced as a byproduct of microbial respiration. In agricultural systems, denitrification and nitrous oxide production are greatly influenced by human management practices. I study the temporal and spatial patterns of nitrous oxide emissions from bioenergy crops at the landscape scale; we hope to determine the effect that widespread establishment of perennial grasses for bioenergy could have on nitrous oxide emissions.
